You Are My Sunshine

“Those health nuts are going to feel pretty stupid when they are dying in the hospital of nothing.”  ~Jeff Wilington

If you take pharmaceuticals regularly, have gastrointestinal problems or ANY disease, you are going to want to keep reading.

One of the strongest predictors of disease is an acidic body. In an acidic body, there are too many toxins and not enough oxygen.

Knowing which foods are more acidic, (produce more toxins), is really helpful.  Reducing your intake of meat, dairy and all forms of sugar (that means carbs too!) will greatly enable your body to readjust it’s pH levels.  Americans went from eating meat 2-3 times a week in the 1950’s to eating it 2-3 times a day today!  I know it’s painful even to just think about it, but you will be saving your body from so many complications---and there are so many healthy substitutes out there that you hardly notice you are not having traditional pasta (pick one with brown rice as an ingredient), or white bread (I love spelt bread--it’s in the grocer’s freezer and awesome!).

It should come as no surprise that eating vegetables is good for you.  So increase them.  Whether you are eating them in salads or juicing, they deliver vital nutrients like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium and they help break down toxins.  When you don’t consume these minerals, your body will take them from storage to help break down toxins.  If you are consistently de-voiding your body of these “anti-acids,” you will eventually become acidic.  So eat your veggies!

The good news is, when you change your diet, your body stops craving the acidic foods.    That’s because the parasites in your intestines are greedier than a kid on Halloween, but will eventually give up and go back where they came from when the sweets are gone.  When I started juicing, I had less and less of a desire to eat meat, sugar, and alcohol.  Call it a miracle, because that’s what it seemed like to me! Remember, your body just needs balance.  So keep these suggestions in mind when you are choosing food to fuel your body.

The second most important step in decreasing acidity in the body, is by increasing oxygen levels.  Delivery of oxygen to your cells is one of the single most important factors in changing your acidity level and avoiding disease. That’s why working out is so great for you!  You burn calories while you make your body less acidic by taking in more oxygen.  Plus, you sweat out any toxins close to the skin!  So take a deep breath in!

Believe it or not, people can be “toxic.”  I’m talking emotionally toxic.  They are the people who make you feel drained.  If you are stressed your body becomes more acidic, thus more toxic.  If you are constantly exposed to someone who has a stream of negative outburst and thoughts, you might to sever that relationship. You’ve probably already had lots of feelings that this person doesn’t make you feel good, so listen to your body!

Also, participating in yoga or meditation has a slew of health benefits because you are calming the mind and focused on your breath---which means more oxygen---which means less toxins!  How ‘bout them apples!

The last important factor to pay attention to is your water consumption.  More water means less toxins.  If you have ever received a massage, or worked out with a trainer, they suggest you drink lots of water.  That’s because lactic acid builds up in your muscles and will make you sore and weak if it is not flushed out with water.  Personally, I’ve been doing P90X (I should be sore everyday) and I don’t suffer from any soreness because I have a juice once a day---it hydrates me AND pulls the toxins out.  Also, most people are chronically dehydrated.  Which means the toxins are going to be waiting longer than a gay couple to get married in the state of Louisiana before they get flushed out.  By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already short 1 liter of water.  Plus, studies have shown that most people confuse thirst with hunger.

The type of water you drink is also important, so test your water source to see if it is acidic or alkaline (using pH strips from the pharmacy).  I used my pH strips to test my water and the water out of the tap was alkaline and the water from the Brita was acidic! Yikes!

The good news is that all this effort will pay off.  Making your body more alkaline will enable you to eventually get off medications (if you don’t believe me, watch Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead).  Obviously, this should be discussed with your doctor, but your goal should be to get off as many medications as possible.  ALL pharmaceuticals are acidic. It’s interesting how the medicines that are intended to make us well, eventually makes us sicker.  Also, antibiotics are harmful to your acidity level because they are acidic AND kill off the healthy microforms in your intestines that produce oxygen!  Jeez la weez this sounds like a conspiracy!

Now, all this might seem extreme---because it is.  You’re probably in shock like I paraded a naked 6 foot 5 man in red leather underwear and cowboy boots singing, “You are my sunshine!”  Get over it.  You can do anything you put your mind to. If you are thinking you can’t do this, you are unnecessarily creating boundaries that you now need to knock down if you want to get healthy.  Just change your mind and take one day at a time.

I Can See Clearly Now

“The evidence now amassed from researchers around the world shows that the same diet that is good for the prevention of cancer is also good for the prevention of heart disease, as well as obesity, diabetes, cataracts, macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s, cognitive dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and other diseases...[that diet is] a whole foods, plant-based diet.”  (China Study pg. 110)

Not everyone needs to start juicing for health(it would be helpful!), but everyone needs to know their options so that they can make sound decisions about their health.  I was in the dark about much of the following information despite my extensive education and strong interest in all things health related.  I’m grateful for the opportunity to help present this info in a way that is palatable to you.  Hopefully, it will spark an inner knowing that this is on the path to well-being.

Starting simple...

When I started out I didn’t know the difference between juicing and blending.  Blending is easy to describe--it’s when you throw stuff into a blender (duh!) and mix it all up.  You wind up eating/drinking everything you put into the blender.

Juicing is different.  Juicing separates out the insoluble fiber because you want to be able to consume the maximum amount of vitamins and minerals into your body.  Insoluble fiber is very bulky, which makes you feel full, so removing the insoluble fiber allows you to consume what seems like a zillion vegetables.  Because I’m naturally very curious, I tried to eat the insoluble fiber that came out of the juicer---let me be the first to tell you, it really is insoluble.  I couldn’t do anything to break it down.  It felt like the bristles of a broom in my mouth--which was interesting because I could actually visualize how this type of fiber could clean out my intestines like a broom sweeping everything out (which is what it ultimately does).

What’s left after extracting the insoluble fiber are the vitamins, minerals and soluble fiber.  These three things are what binds to toxins and pull them out of the body.  This is why juicing is awesome!---and known as a detoxer.  It is also why juicing is alkalizing.  The less toxins in your body, the more alkaline your body is.  An overly acidic body is the underlying cause of ALL diseases and dis-ease.

You may be wondering where do I fall on this scale?  There are two indicators.  One is if you are American.  You think I’m kidding, but I’m not.  Generally speaking, the American diet is so linked with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s, obesity, and cancer that these diseases are referred by some researchers as the diseases of affluence. The more affluent a society is, the more likely they are consuming meat, dairy products, sodas, cookies, and cake on a regular basis.

You may be wondering, what’s wrong with that?  These foods are so catastrophic because they cause acid to accumulate in the body.  This happens because the “good” bacteria and parasites in our bodies feed off these types of food, so they grow and reproduce at a rapid rate leading to over-crowding in your gut faster than a sale at Bloomingdales during the holiday season.  This over-growth is what creates an acidic environment and makes the breeding grounds for disease.  These bacteria/parasites secrete (aka poop) toxins into your body.  These toxins are acidic.

The second indicator is how you are feeling.  If you experience weight gain, inability to lose weight, infertility, constant cravings for sugar and alcohol, yeast infections, brain “fog,” chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, asthma, allergies, PMS, confusion, irritability, anxiety, memory problems, rectal itching, gas, bloating and panic attacks to name a few, your body is likely acidic.

The pH level of our blood is so explicitly linked to disease or health, that you would think first graders would be talking about it on the bus.  If your pH is under 7--you are acidic.  If it is above, you are alkaline.  It’s that simple.

Your body strives to be in constant balance (harmony is a pH level of 7.365).  It will desperately try to process these toxins by storing them in your fat, tissues and organs.  Even though your body has more nooks and crannies than an English muffin, you will eventually run out of storage space.  The body will also try to neutralize these acids by leeching stored minerals from you body (your bones for example).  When all possible avenues for recovery have been exhausted disease will really have a tight grip on you.

The good news is!--- you can help yourself by making wise food choices and participating in a few activities to control the population even better than Big Brother.  I’ll be posting these in the next few blogs.

Until next time!

*You can test how acidic (or alkaline!) you are through using pH strips found in your local pharmacy.  (The strips with color are the easiest to read.  Pharmacies might also have more sophisticated tests available for purchase.)

**I'd like to also include that a lot of this information came from the China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Tomas M. Campbell II and The pH Miracle by Robert O. Young, PhD., and Shelley Redford Young.  Much thanks to them!!!

I'm All Shook Up

"Why not go out on a limb?  Isn't that where the fruit is?"  ~Frank Scully

Hi Folks!  Boy, it’s been a while!

Anyone who’s seen me in the last couple of months knows I’m jazzed about juicing!  I’m a huge fan of healthy eating and now I’ve reached a new level of understanding and health.

It all started when I watched the documentary, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.”  Quite possibly one of the most inspiring documentaries---ever!  I highly recommend it for anyone---particularly anyone suffering from disease and/or on medication.  The documentary followed two guys with severe obesity (300+ and 400+ lbs) and a rare skin disorder.  They were both on a slew of medications to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol, pain and their rare skin disorder. By the end of the documentary (one man juiced for 60 days, the other 90 days), they were off ALL medications!  That is only 2 and 3 months respectively!  They also dropped ridiculous amounts of weight and attained a “healthy” status from their doctors.

I couldn’t believe this form of “medicine” is and was available to me my whole life!

After watching the documentary, which ended at 11:30 at night, I wanted to juice right then and there.  I had no interest in sleep, I wanted to go out and get my new juicer and I felt like Bed Bath and Beyond should be open for such an occasion!  I have to admit, I never thought I’d be the type of person who would juice---but this resonated with me.

You may be familiar with the feeling when something resinates with you. You can tell something does because you feel inspired to take actions---sometime irrational actions (like quit your job! or buy a juicer at midnight)--but you just knooooow you should do something--- NOT doing it just feels plain stupid.

So the next day I got my juicer and the obscene amount of vegetables required and gave it a go.  I thought I can do this even if it tastes bad.  To my surprise, not only did I like it (I add a small jalapeno in so it taste like salsa), I also found my body invigorated.  People who saw me could tell when I juiced.  I’ve never had energy like that before.  Quite honestly, it looked like I was “on” something like cocaine, caffeine, or amphetamines.  What also wound up happening was I no longer wanted meat (that was surprising!) and I also had no interest in alcohol or sugary things (sweet!).  ALL cravings were gone.

All these fantastic results inspired me to research what was going on in my body.  Apparently it all boils down to your body’s pH.  When you are too acidic for long periods of time, your body can retain weight, crave alcohol, have allergies, asthma, eczema, infertility, acne, cancer, tumors, gas, bloating, yeast infections, panic attacks, low energy levels, brain “fog,” and a myriad of other health problems.

Personally, I don’t know one person who doesn’t suffer from one of these things!  Furthermore, I am astonished and appalled that this has NEVER been brought to my attention from a doctor.  To check if I was an anomaly I asked one of my clients who has SEVERAL top Gastro-intestinal doctors if THEY had ever linked her diet to her problems in her gut.  The answer was a shocking NO.  She was allowed to eat highly processed foods, few vegetables and told to continue to take several medications to correct what was going on in her intestines---for the rest of her life.

Thankfully she has started juicing and avoiding processed foods and her doctors are amazed at her health.  They are shocked at her progress---really?  Maybe they need to watch “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.”

In my next few blogs I’ll explain more about how you can adjust your pH levels for optimal health and how a nasty parasite might be the cause of your cravings!

Until next time...cheers!
